Jewish Living Magazine has named Tulsa’s Sherwin Miller Museum as one of the top Jewish museums in North America, behind only the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington and the Beth Tzedec Reuben & Helene Dennis Museum in Toronto.

The Sherwin Miller Museum was ranked higher than other important facilities that preserve and study Judaica in much larger metro areas, such as the Spertus Museum in Chicago, the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, and the Jewish Museum of Florida in Miami.

"We’re pleased with the recognition," said Arthur Feldman, CEO of the Sherwin Miller Museum.

"We also agree with the premise of the writers, that Jewish Museums – in general – are ‘a lot more approachable than you might remember,’ as we are in the process of making sure that our collections here are presented in just that way."

Feldman said he often compares the Sherwin Miller Museum to a successful and popular campaign for Levy’s Rye Bread in the 1960s. "You don’t have to be Jewish to love Levy’s," went the slogan. "That’s us. That’s the Sherwin Miller Museum," said Feldman. "We want everyone in Tulsa, Oklahoma and around the world to know that there’s something for everyone at the Sherwin Miller Museum – regardless of your ethnic background or religious faith."

Jewish Living Magazine, in its March/April, 2008 issue, selected ten of the best Jewish museums from 80 across North America. The Sherwin Miller Museum was ranked number three on that list.

 

 

The lowest site on the planet, the Dead Sea is noted for unique landscapes that combine the wild terrain of the Judean Desert with the cobalt blues and emerald greens of its rich mineral water. Dotted by natural white salt sculptures, the waters of the Dead Sea are considered to have spiritual and healing properties, and the cultural and historical legacy of the area interests archaeologists and researchers worldwide.Mr. Duby Tal began learning photography after serving as a helicopter pilot in the Israel Air Force. A skilled geologist, he decided to become an aerial photographer, combining his two passions – photography and flying. In 1988, he and partner Moni Haramati founded Albatross, one of Israel’s leading companies in the field of visual communication and aerial photography. In addition to artistic and commercial photography from the air and on the ground, the company specializes in publishing books, travel and adventure films, exhibitions, and multimedia products.

The Invitational is a competition open to school-age children, K-12, in Tulsa. The 2008 Invitational is currently open to students of the Tulsa Public School System, Heritage Academy, Temple Israel School, B’nai Emunah School, and Chabad House.The Invitational is set up by Divisions:

• Kindergarten and First grades
• Second and Third grades
• Fourth and Fifth grades
• Sixth and Seventh grades
• Eighth and Ninth grades
• Tenth, Eleventh and Twelfth grades

Prizes are awarded for the First Place in each division: 25.00 for First Place, and certificates for Second, Third, and Fourth Places. The winning masks will be exhibited during March and April at the Sherwin Miller Museum. Other masks may be included in the exhibition as allowed by space and the number of entries. All masks will be returned to their schools after the end of the Invitational. All masks must be wearable. No mask may be over 24 inches high, but there are no width restrictions. Stable material suitable for exhibition must be used-no organic material that decomposes, no construction paper (Color fades too quickly), no hazardous material (sharp metal edges or sharp protrusions). Papier-mache, fired clay, foam and other three-dimensional constructions are encouraged. All masks must be marked in permanent on the back-no taped on names. Entries are due by Friday, February 22, 2008, delivered to the Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art, 2021 East 71^st St., Tulsa, Oklahoma. A Traveling Exhibition created by the Hebrew Union Museum of New York. This exhibition, gathered from the Sigmund Balka Collection of the HUC, “encompasses the expression of European and American artists of the 19th and 20th centuries as they encountered the challenges of modernity.” The exhibition includes images of traditional Jewish life and religion while it documents the Jewish quest to make a new home in America and the fate of those caught up in the Holocaust. Featuring works on paper from artists such as Max Beckmann, Ben Shahn, Jacques Lipchitz, Raphael Soyer, Chaim Gross, Leonard Baskin, Will Barnet, Robert Motherwell, and Larry Rivers, the exhibit tells the story of the Jewish journey over the last two centuries.Through its extensive national and international relationships with major museums, the Sherwin Miller Museum is able to bring you the only viewing of this exhibition outside New York City. Opening in the Special Exhibitions Gallery February 3, The Eye of the Collector is an opportunity to experience great works of art rarely exhibited in the Midwest.
